Noir Echoes
Late-night R&B noir — muted keys, low pulses and intimate vocal chops, recorded close and mixed closer.
Overview
Axel Mercer writes songs that sound like 2 a.m. feels. Noir Echoes leans all the way in: a Rhodes-style figure damped almost to silence, sub pulses instead of a bassline, and Axel's own voice chopped into the texture so the record answers itself.
The challenge
Intimacy is fragile in a mix. Every dB of compression pulled the vocal forward and pushed the mood back, and the low pulses kept swallowing the kick. The record had to feel whispered and still move a room.
Approach
We mixed at conversation level and refused to go louder — if it didn't work quiet, it didn't work. The pulses were tuned around the kick instead of under it, the vocal chops were printed with their reverb so the space is part of the sound, and the master preserves the whisper with dynamics wide open.
